In one of the most exciting games in the seven-year history of PLFA II, each team came back from two-score deficits before the Angels got a touchdown with six seconds remaining to stun the Sopot Seahawks on Saturday in Torun.
The Angels trailed 13-0 after a quarter, but they cut the gap to 13-7 before halftime on a Jakub Mazan touchdown reception. After a lightning delay, Mazan ran the second half kickoff back 90 yards for a touchdown to give Torun their first lead, and the Angels went up by 9 points later in the third quarter on a short touchdown run by Bartosz Mroz.
Luke Zetazate got the Seahawks back to within a field goal with his second touchdown pass of the game, a 10-yarder to Paweł Henicz, and the Seahawks regained the lead in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Andrzej Woloszkiewicz. That gave Sopot a 27-22 advantage, setting up Mroz's late heroics.
The Seahawks will have almost a month and a half to get healthy for their next game, which happens to be the return leg of the season series against the Angels on July 12. Torun will next take on the Slupsk Griffons in another home game on June 21.
"This game was everything that I thought it would be. Sopot ran their offense well and took advantage of some things we do on 4th down and kept drives going by going on 4th down and getting the yards they needed. Our offense put up 3 TD's and our Kick off return team changed the game around when we opened up the second half with a 90-yard return for a touchdown.
This was the kind of game that came down to who had the ball last. Our QB took control of the offense in the second half and really ran the type of offense that I knew this team could run. Our running backs were just hard, all day, and in the 3rd and 4th quarter they were breaking tackles and getting the yards we needed. Our defense, even though Sopot got 27 points on us, did their job because other than one mix up on 4th down where they scored, Sopot had to earn everything they got. Nothing came easy for them and the defense was as physical as I have seen them. Not a lot of teams in Division 2 will keep that offense under 30 points.
There are things we need to work on, and we still have to get better. We have take what we did well and build on it, and correct what we didn't do well, me included.
This win is what I call a quality win. We beat a good team, at home, and it is the first time this club has beaten Sopot. This game meant a lot in terms of making the playoffs and making a run at winning group A. We still have a long way to go which includes the rematch game in Sopot in July. I know this much, they have an excellent coaching staff and when we see them again, they are going to have that club running on all cylinders and we are going to have to be in top form"- said Angels head coach Bill Moore.
